Giving Tuesday

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. This year, our focus is on restoring Sunshine Cabin. Your tax-deductible donations can be sent to Canaan Acres marked “Sunshine Cabin.” We also need volunteers to help when it comes time to rebuild.

Meier Meadow

Meier Meadow, previously known as the Registration Building and Maintenance Shed, has served various functions and undergone several changes over the years.

• When you registered for family camp, Mrs. Gibbs greeted you.

• It traveled across the campground, serving many purposes for years.

• Phil Meier worked in it for over ten years as the camp maintenance manager.

• Recently, it had become a place for junk with no home, and it was time to repurpose it.

It is a small building with paneled walls, wood plank flooring, with two desks. It was air-conditioned, a place to have keys made, and had a landline phone so Phil could be reached when he was there. It was where you went for your assignment if you were there to help.

With the help of Beth Bailey, my sister, we began cleaning it out, finding homes for the usable items and tossing the rest. We made it ready for the Zanesville Work & Witness team that spent a week with us this past spring. In a few hours, they tore off old, rotted boards, replaced double doors that were falling off with new T1 siding, making it ready for a fresh coat of paint and a little creativity. 

The desks are like Phil left them many years ago, and eventually we will go through them, though there is something to be said for leaving some things the same. We set up one desk as a fishing pole and archery repair station. And the other is still "Phil's Desk". We left the antique car posters on the wall while lining the rest with fishing poles and bows.

Phil and Janine Meier have spent many hours working at the camp over the years. Although they are now retired, they continue to prepare crafts for kids' camp, set up or tear down the Dining Hall, make popcorn, help with meals, and wash windows, pews, and beds. They also help with building projects or add their creativity to the different activities we plan.

Currently, it serves as a temporary home for fishing and archery as I slowly transform it into my gardening shed. This building will help me to manage all the gardening tasks as I bring color to the camp. I am excited to plant all the wildflower and sunflower seeds I have. The archery and pond equipment will move to a new (to us) building in the pond area, donated to us by Dale & Kay Powers.

The Meier Meadow Shed is still in use and has been dedicated to Phil and Janine in recognition of their years of service, collecting more memories and history of the work God is doing here.

Caravan’s Badging Ceremony

Saturday, November 15th, was a celebration of the awards that the students have earned. Highlights below and more can be found on the Facebook page here.

Calab Shreiner - Phineas F. Bresee Award

Caleb earned the Phineas F. Bresee award, the highest honor possible. He finished his badge work this past spring and has continued to attend to help other students with their badges.
